The lies we have been told

Initially, I thought of writing an article titled "things I wish I had known five years earlier" but honestly speaking most of them I had already known. Also, this article is intentionally written in Hinglish so to have a more realistic feel with the narrative.

Disclaimer: Views can be biased, keep your own judgment with you while reading it.

1.) CGPA

I vividly remember my seniors giving this advice to me "agar job chahiye toh cg matter nahi karta but research me jaana hai toh kam se kam 8 lana padega". Everyone nodded their head in agreement as if no truer words had ever been spoken before.

For the next five years every time during the exams I asked myself the purpose of "hacking" the previous years' question paper so that I could repeat the same process during examination Hall.  Well, ideally this shouldn't have been the case. Ideally, learning should be equivalent to scoring high marks in an exam. But that's not the case. Not for anyone.

Experience tells us that the best way to study for an examination is to make the list of probable things that will come in the exam, understand them, practice enough problems to cover the range of expected questions and deliver during the examination. The problem with hacking the question paper is that knowledge often is retained just for the duration of the examination, and even if you remember parts of it later, the breadth and depth of the topic is somewhere lost. So clearly examinations aren't the best way to test if a person is learning something or not and yet we tend to study the most just before a test. Hence, order to increase the growth rate in learning there needs to be examination conducted.

You solve previous year paper, you can pass the exam. You solve the previous 5 year papers, you get a distinction. You solve the previous 10 year papers you can probably help the teacher set the question paper for your batch. The only way one can make the tests unhackable is not to increase the difficulty level of the exams (as is assumed by many) but to make them optional. If we are not compelled to study something, we won't do it out of pressure but we will do it for a higher belief system, thus ensuring contentment with our learning experience. Now, keeping students engaged and interested all the time would require newer initiatives and creative solutions in approaches to teaching which is indeed a hard task to accomplish, and I do not think it is right thing to blame teachers for that (Note that I am presenting this point of view just to discard it later is because many of the students believe in it) but instead, make CGPA matter way less than it already does. CGPA should be a metric to guide students rather than a fail-safe mechanism of promotion/demotion. Just like how a gym trainer guides its' incubees. They advise them on follow up course of action depending on the individual requirements rather than kick them out of the gym.

“Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.” ― Richard Feynmann

2.) Happiness

In the last 50 years(1970-2020), we have seen the advent of technology, and very few deaths because of famine/wars as compared to the previous 50 years (1900-1970). Fewer humans are dying because of starvation. More and more people have access to basic needs such as roti, kapda and makaan. Yet suicides rates are through the roof. Before 1950, suicide rates in countries such as Japan, New Zealand and France was one in 100,000 but today it has increased to a whopping 25 people in 100,000. The reason is pretty simple when economic prosperity happens, expectations ballon. People don't get depressed because of external happenings but from failures internally. Going forward into the century even if the government provides free food for all, cure us of all diseases, ensure world peace, free electricity and internet access to all, it will probably ballon the expectations that people have from themselves, thus leading to more misery.  According to John Stuart Mill "happiness is nothing but pleasure and freedom from pain, and that beyond pleasure and pain there is no good and no evil. Anyone who tries to deduce good and evil from something else (such as the word of God, or the national interest) is fooling you, and perhaps fooling himself too". So, we are biologically entitled to increase our pleasant sensations, the problem is pleasant sensations are like a drug that needs to upgraded with every high you have. Let's assume you feel high after eating a dessert you have craved for long. You end up having it on a regular basis, you won't feel the same high in your second, third eatings. You will crave for more. You will crave for a better dessert and that search will make you miserable.
So what should we do? Aim for less!? Doesn't that sound like losing? No. That's not my point. My point is that pleasure would only feel like pleasure if it is constrained for an aeon of time. Repeated pleasure is nothing but pain.

And when solutions are easy and plenty, we do look out for repeated pleasures.

3.) Technology

I recently saw a video from 1989 which talked about how our world in 2020 would look like. It talked about flying cars, home automation system and voice-activated circuits. I am not sure about that but 2020 has seen a rise of mobile applications such as Snapchat, Twitter, Reddit, Youtube in ways that wasn't imagined in 1989.

edunova.io: discover yourself

The basic idea around this site is to inspect how our brain functions and try to use games to make learning more addictive. It emphasizes on the idea of self-education and community learning by sharing notes, 'playing' those notes and most importantly creating the notes by extensive research on the web.Edunova believes that there is lot of educational content on the internet but it is not processed in such a way that human brain can comprehend which in turn makes learning things harder. The website acts basically as a pipeline to let people create 'notes' which would be converted into "game levels"  and let our users play it.People can also follow other people and be aware of their activities on edunova.

JEE Mains Rank Out

My last year's class 12h board % was poor so there is a dip in my rank. Otherwise it would have been 20K or something. Here my JEE percentile is 98.35. From this calculation there is a slight chance that I would make into IIIT Bangalore(hope I do).The result of third counselling would be on 3rd July.
Till then get hooked to this song.(Taylor Swift :-D)

..... i screwed it again...:'( :'(

so today was the maths examination...hmmmmmmm so how do i feel ? A1?A2?B1?D?
well actually i feel like D (it is just a hyperbole) ....
so ur nex question?
how i screwed it? ahhh dun tell me abt it :'( :'(
the exam started with well timed strategy... section a which has MCQ's went nice , all correct , except for 1  which i had kept for 'come back later' ...

section b also was pretty cool .... at that time it felt .. wow! i got them all correct but the fact was i had intercepted one question wrong , which was que no.14
"Find the value of k, if the point P(2,4) is equidistant from the points A(5,k) and B(k,7)?"
pretty easy right .. yeah i know it is easy , apparently i understood the question as 'P is mid-point of AB . Find the value of k?'
that was all what went wrong into section-b which compromised of 8 questions each of 2 marks

section c was where i screwed loads of things...
in question no.23 there was an option provided .. one was to find area of quadrilateral , if coordinates were given and second was to get point P(x,y) which divides the line-segment such that AP = 3/7AB
well i knew both of them ... and that actually was the problem! so how did i screw it up? i first did top question in which i got the area of quad. as -7 cm square , now that was not possible ... so instead of fiddling with formulas i jumped to next question instead .. in the next question i think so i panicked and understood that point P is actually divided in ratio 3:7 instead of 3:4 .....more worse while revising i got my mistake in above question  where the area of quad was 7cm square and not -7cm square...but then i passed tht question thinking that their is no point is in cancelling the answer again and doing the first option as i thought that i had  already got the correct solution ..

in question no.28 i did worst possible mistake of understandin that 9 * 8 = 63 ... hmm i was trying to divide 943 orally in mind with 8 and the result was that it leaves no remainder ...and no marks :'( :'(  even when i was small , the table of 8 was most difficult to learn ...  whatever ....
this was the question
Find the sum of all multiples of 8 lying between 201 and 950.
i had done similar kind of questions while practicing and this was indeed marked as most easy question in my Together With Book ....BITCH!!@#$#$#$%$%$^&*
While revising the paper i checked the calculations of the main formula ... not that calculation though gahhhh foolish of me..

section-d
question was bit long.. and related to surface area and volumes... first i made a mistake of reading the question wrong , then after cancelling whole damn shit i made mistake by assuming that square of 2.75 + square of 15 is not = to perfect square , and thus assumed nearby values of numbers and then messed with calculations ahead...

i say it i panicked a lot ...... felt like hell after givin the paper but everything was back to normal when i watched  sarabhai vs sarabahi and a castle episode...
WHATEVER?WHO CARES....*

Pre-boards over!

It seems like pre-boards are over finally ! Those were the worst ever given examinations of my life... i mean think of it taking 2 examinations in period of 1 month! calling first one a practice and 2nd one 'real' .. damn it... the board examination duration is enough to prepare for the whole examination , but they have preparation tests for pre-boards , vacation 4 pre-boards , then pre - boards , then vacation for board examination and then a 5.2 average day gap in all the board papers ....
FUCK OFF!
what do they think we are.. computers? or apple employees ..

FOR - RACHANA TEACHERS AND THEIR TEACHINGS

Whenever I think of character 'Teacher' , an image which comes to my mind is that of a person very simple, easily accessible and freely approachable but still leaving a certain grace and reserve in his/her walks or talks .A person with ever ready wit and keen sense of humor but with due care to not let it slip into the mere  funny 'hurt' statement .A person who is very knowledgeable but never pendatory . A person who could be trusted but never to be taken for granted , and most of all a very much students representative but without looking common , somehow carrying an inscrutable halo of some strange mystique.

In fact , these were some of the qualities of a timeless teacher ,the first vice-president and former president of India - Dr. Sarvpilli Radhakrishnan . He was the most respected, educated and the person who provided solace to the country in time of crisis. When some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, he said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege, if September 5th is observed as Teacher's day". From then onwards, the 5th of September has been observed as Teachers Day, in India.

For our part of bargain , we should always try to deliver our best in honesty, sincerity and discipline , we must always understand that it takes a deal of endeavor and to deliver lectures and manage a class of 45 students which our teachers accomplish. Ask all the people who are crowned with success and they will always tell you that behind them their is a hand of a great teacher.A person who has guided them , given them their instincts which they have trusted blind-folded all their life.

On a more personal note I would like to thank all the teachers of Rachana School for giving me such an exposure to education and wish them a VERY HAPPY TEACHERS DAY

Do our parents give us enough freedom to make our own choices ??

In the early 2000's , the world went through a transition, it became flatter , smaller and smarter place to live in . Due to emergence of internet and steroid gadgets there was information flow like never before , this may have destroyed all other barriers but it created new barriers for people - the ones born into the bubble and the ones born before the bubble and in my opinion this is what has embarked upon the differences of opinion between us and our parents as they belonged to latter 'creed' of people. For Example go ahead and ask grandads-"Are your kids gonna be vegetarian ?" They would reply "Yes.." Ask the GEN Y the same question then they would rather reply "nah!! we going to eat KFC".
They have their notions based on their experiences and we have ours based on our experiences.Their experience truly more than that of ours but a good decision not just needs an experience(yes! it helps) , it needs precision and innovation.
According to me freedom to make your own choices cannot be given or gifted it is owned by the student itself . If the student is well aware of the world around him , and knows how much time to sit on facebook or how much junk food he/she should eat or knows what career options he's gonna take I don't think parents should interfere in our decisions based upon our perspective of life , I am lucky enough have to such parents who let me take my chances in my life and I respect my parents for that , at the same time we should always know where to make our boundaries if we don't do that then I believe our parents have right to intervene in choice we choose for ourselves .
Even though these generations has wide set of  opinions , collaboration should be maintained to keep argument and scuffles at bay . There should be an agenda of co-operation on common interests, mutual needs and shared responsibilities , which both parents and their wards should understand .

Yeah.. I know surprise ending!! :P
Hope u liked this piece of graffiti .... will be writing more

MARKS.................................................

India won World Cup 2011 . Marks . Anna Hazare is on Fast . Marks . Osama Bin Laden is dead . Marks . Obama is getting fat . Marks . Facebook has notched 17 million users in India . Marks .
The sun may rise from west but parents , teachers and neighbors won't stop asking us "How much marks did you got beta ?? " Examination are a great way of testing student's potential  in academic performance but they are not just enough . Marks do not tell that I am good at web programming and coding , they do not tell that I am an avid reader , they do not tell that I am guy with creative and innovative mind for tomorrow . My real talent and passion is never shown up in the report card for me , it is and will be an alphabet on Report Card , but to whom does it matter what i think ,  all what matters is Marks , weather you care for them or you don't . Why does sports and other co-curricular activities take backyard stop in our route to definition of success ?? Why can't still in 21st century passion replace profession ??

Kapil Sibal tried to introduce CCE (Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation ) but it now it seems like 'Continuously Crushed Education' where teachers instead of giving REAL-TIME activities pamper students for only 1 motive - 'Marks' . I get to listen many teachers in the class quoting that 'Children If u study like this no wonder what your FA Grades are going to be' . From REAL TIME ACTIVITIES i mean an educative field trip , a visit to an office of a MNC or any sort of activity which includes outing of the student to a new location where he/she can learn through interaction .
Of Course I can sit and talk like Baba Ramdev or Anna Hazare and blame the bloody government for everything but no we need to solve this problem from grass-root levels , we need to see how much contribution we are making to enhance the education system which we are a part of (directly or indirectly) .
